Peutz-Jeghers syndrome

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) causes growths called hamartomatous polyps in the gastrointestinal tract (particularly the stomach and intestines).  People with PJS also have a greatly increased risk of developing certain types of cancer.

Features of the condition

  • Gastrointestinal polyps
  • Dark skin coloration around the mouth, eyes, and nose; develops in early childhood and usually fades after puberty
  • Tumors of the ovaries and testes
  • Gastrointestinal cancers
  • Breast cancer
