Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is the most common cause of vision loss in individuals greater than 60 years of age. It is caused by gradual deterioration of the macula. The symptoms may get worse over time.

Symptoms

• Blurred vision
• Straight lines appearing wavy or irregular
• Blind spots
• Loss of central vision

Causes/Risk Factors

• Age
• Caucasian ancestry
• Female gender
• Family history of macular degeneration
• Smoking
• Obesity
