Hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome

Hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome (HBOC) is caused by inherited mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. Although not everyone with HBOC will get cancer, having this condition significantly increases the risk to develop certain cancers.

Risk Factors

  • Family history of breast or ovarian cancer
  • Early onset breast cancer
  • Cancer in both breasts
  • Multiple family members with breast and/or ovarian cancer
  • Breast and ovarian cancer in a single individual
  • Male breast cancer
  • Ashkenazi (Eastern European) Jewish ancestry
  • Genetic mutations (see below)
