Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia

Multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) is part of a group of disorders that affect the body's network of hormone-producing glands (the endocrine system). Individuals with MEN are at increased risk to develop endocrine tumors. These tumors can be noncancerous (benign) or cancerous (malignant). The two major forms of multiple endocrine neoplasia are called type 1 (MEN1) and type 2 (MEN2).

Features of the condition

  • MEN1
    • Parathyroid disease
    • Pituitary tumors
    • Other endocrine system tumors
    • Benign skin tumors (angiofibromas, collegenomas,
    • lipomas, leiomyomas)
  • MEN2
    • Medullary thyroid cancer
    • Pheochromocytoma (adrenal gland tumor)
    • Parathyroid disease

Risk Factors

  • MEN1

      • More than one of these is seen in a single individual
      • These are seen in more than one family member
  • MEN2
    • Medullary thyroid cancer, pheochromocytoma, and parathyroid disease when
      • More than one of these is seen in a single individual
      • These are seen in more than one family member
